Local pickup

How to get alerts for eBay local pickup listings near you

To find eBay local pickup near you, filter a search by distance from your ZIP code and by local pickup, or create a Spotter set to local pickup only within 10, 25, 50 or 100 miles of your ZIP. Spotter Otter then emails you each new pickup listing that matches, which suits furniture, appliances and anything else that costs a lot to ship.

Spotter Otter is in testing. Photo search and AI review are coming back soon. Until then, Spotters match the exact keywords you enter.

Why local pickup is worth watching

Shipping a dresser, a chest freezer or a table saw can cost as much as the item, if the seller will ship it at all. Many sellers of heavy things offer local pickup only, which limits their buyers to people within driving distance. Fewer buyers and no shipping bill can add up to a much better price on big items.

Things that are especially worth a pickup search:

  • Furniture: dressers, dining sets, sectionals, desks, office chairs, mid-century pieces.
  • Appliances: washers and dryers, ranges, refrigerators, chest freezers.
  • Fitness equipment: treadmills, rowers, squat racks, sets of weight plates.
  • Tools and outdoor gear: table saws, air compressors, riding mowers, grills, kayaks.
  • Big, fragile or awkward things: upright pianos, pinball machines, large TVs, aquariums.

Find local pickup listings on eBay

On ebay.com, search for the item, then use the filters beside the results: set a distance from your ZIP code in the item location filter, and choose local pickup in the delivery options. Sort by Time: newly listed to see the latest first. You can save that search like any other.

Two things to know. Some listings offer both shipping and pickup, so they appear too; choosing pickup simply saves you the postage. And many sellers write pickup only or local pickup in the title, but not all do, so rely on the filter rather than those words.

Set up a local pickup Spotter

  1. Name the item. Use the brand and model if it has one (Herman Miller Aeron size B, Concept2 Model D rower), or a clear description if it doesn’t (walnut dresser 6 drawer).
  2. Turn on local pickup only. Enter your U.S. ZIP code and choose 10, 25, 50 or 100 miles.
  3. Set your price. With no shipping to add, your maximum is close to what you’ll actually pay, plus any sales tax.
  4. Exclude what you can’t use. For furniture, words like dollhouse, miniature, hardware only, knobs keep doll-size versions and spare parts out.
  5. Start it. Each new pickup listing that matches arrives by email and on your Alerts page.

Measurements matter more than usual with big items, and this is where Spotter Otter’s AI helps. Describe what you need in a sentence, such as 30-inch gas range, stainless, under $400, and Luna, Spotter Otter’s AI, turns it into a search and must-haves for you to confirm, with local pickup and your radius set as above. Each must-have is checked against the ways sellers write it (30 in, 30-inch, 30 inch): a range listed as 36 inches is left out, and one that doesn’t give a width comes through as a Maybe match.

If you want the same model as one you’ve seen, take a photo of its model label or of the item itself. Spotter Otter reads the brand and model number from the photo and writes a description for you to check before the Spotter starts.

Choosing a radius

  • 10 or 25 miles for everyday things you’d only fetch if they’re close: a bookcase, a mini fridge, a bike.
  • 50 miles for something worth borrowing a truck for.
  • 100 miles for rare or valuable pieces worth a day trip.

A setup that works well: run two Spotters for the same item. One close to home with your normal maximum, and one at 100 miles with a lower maximum, so the long drive only comes up when the price makes it worthwhile.

Example: you want a rowing machine and don’t want to pay to ship one. Create a Spotter for Concept2 Model D rower with local pickup only within 25 miles of your ZIP and your usual maximum, then a second one within 100 miles with a maximum well below it. Add monitor only, seat only, for parts to Exclude so spare parts don’t set it off.

Before you buy

Ask the seller through eBay messages, so there’s a record of what was said:

  • Exact dimensions and weight, and whether it comes apart (legs off, drawers out, shelves removed).
  • Where it is: ground floor, stairs or an elevator, and whether anyone can help you load it.
  • For appliances: when it was last used, any leaks or error codes, and whether you can see it running.
  • Smoke, pets or damp storage, if those matter to you.
  • When you can collect it, and the exact pickup address.

Then measure your doorways, stairs and the cargo space of your vehicle. Bring straps, moving blankets, gloves, a dolly and the tools to take legs or doors off.

Safety tips for pickup meetups

  • Pay through eBay. Check out on eBay rather than paying cash or through another app, so you keep eBay’s buyer protection where it applies. Be wary of any seller who asks to finish the deal off eBay.
  • Meet in public for smaller items. A busy parking lot works, and many police stations have a marked spot for online sale exchanges.
  • For big items at a home, don’t go alone. Bring a friend, go in daylight, and tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
  • Check it before you load it. Open the drawers, look underneath, find the model label on appliances and test what you can. If it isn’t as described, don’t load it; sort it out with the seller through eBay.
  • Walk away if things change. A new address at the last minute, a request for extra money or pressure to hurry are all reasons to leave.

Good to know: Spotter Otter watches eBay in the United States (ebay.com), so pickup Spotters use a U.S. ZIP code. It never buys or bids for you: each alert links to the listing, and you arrange the pickup with the seller on eBay.

Questions

How do I find eBay local pickup near me?

On eBay, filter by distance from your ZIP code and choose local pickup in the delivery options. To hear about new ones, create a Spotter with local pickup only and a radius of 10, 25, 50 or 100 miles.

What radius should I choose?

As far as you’d really drive for the item: 10 or 25 miles for everyday things, 50 or 100 for rare pieces. A wider Spotter with a lower maximum price makes long drives worth it.

Is it safe to pick up an eBay item from a stranger?

Take the same care as with any sale between strangers. Pay and message through eBay, meet in public for small items, bring someone for large ones, and check the item before you load it.

Can I use local pickup outside the U.S.?

Spotter Otter watches eBay in the United States (ebay.com) today, so the pickup ZIP code must be a U.S. one.

Will Spotter Otter arrange the pickup?

No. It alerts you to the listing and links to it on eBay. You buy and arrange the pickup with the seller.

Let the otter watch for it.

Tell Spotter Otter what you want and your price. It watches new eBay listings and tells you when a match appears.
