Start with the words sellers use
eBay matches your words against listing titles first, so search the way sellers write, not the way you’d describe the item to a friend:
- Brand and model: Breville BES870XL finds more of the right machine than Breville espresso machine with grinder.
- Short is usually better. Every extra word must appear in the title, so a long search quietly drops good listings that word it differently.
- Use the version that matters: a size, a capacity, an edition or a year. Dutch oven 5.5 qt, iPad Air 5th generation, first edition.
How to exclude words on eBay
Put a minus sign directly before the word you don’t want, with no space: switch oled -case -dock. You can exclude as many words as you like in one search, and it’s the quickest way to clear out accessories, parts and empty boxes. Good words to exclude depend on the item, but case, for parts, box only and replica come up again and again. Our guide to eBay red flags explains what those phrases mean in a title.
If you’d rather not type symbols, Advanced Search has a box for words to exclude.
eBay search operators: exact phrases and either-or
eBay understands a few search operators that make a search more precise:
| Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A minus sign before a word | Leaves out listings with that word | switch oled -case -dock |
| Quotes around words | Searches an exact phrase, words together in that order | "box only" |
| Words in brackets, separated by commas | Finds listings with any one of them | dyson (v10,v11,v15) |
Leave no space between the minus sign and the word, and no spaces inside the brackets. If a search with operators returns nothing, try it without them first, then add one at a time.
eBay Advanced Search and the filters that matter
Advanced Search, linked beside the search box on ebay.com, gathers eBay’s search options on one page, while the filters beside the results do most of the everyday work:
- Price: set a minimum as well as a maximum. A minimum skips the cases, cables and parts that share the item’s name.
- Condition: New, Open box, Used, Refurbished and For parts or not working. Check the last one is off unless you want it.
- Buying format: Buy It Now shows a price you can pay right now; auctions show a starting bid that may rise.
- Item location and delivery: free shipping, local pickup, or listings in your country.
- Category: picking the right category often removes more junk than any keyword.
Advanced Search adds options the results page doesn’t show, such as searching titles and descriptions, looking at sold listings, and seeing listings from one particular seller.
How to see the newest listings on eBay
Change the sort from Best Match to Time: newly listed to see the newest listings first. Best Match mixes old and new, so a listing posted a minute ago can sit pages down. Newly listed is where underpriced Buy It Now listings appear before anyone buys them. Choose Time: ending soonest for auctions about to close.
Searches that find more
- Try other names. The same item may be listed by model number, by its nickname, or with the brand misspelled. Run each one.
- Search the description too. In Advanced Search, tick the option to include descriptions, for items whose useful detail sits below the title, like a part number.
- Check sold listings to see what an item really goes for before you decide a price is good; see how to see sold listings on eBay.
Searching in the eBay app
The same operators work in the app; only Advanced Search is missing. Filters live under Filter at the top of the results, including Sold items, condition, format, price and delivery options, and Time: newly listed is under the sort button beside it. Set up anything that needs Advanced Search, such as searching descriptions, on the website, save the search, and it will be there in the app too.
If results look strange in either place, check for a filter you forgot was on: a leftover price range or a category from an earlier search is the most common reason a good search finds nothing.
Stop repeating the same search
Once a search is right, save it so new listings come to you instead:
- Save it on eBay. Select Save this search and turn on updates, and eBay tells you about new items by email and in the app.
- Or make it a Spotter. SpotterOtter watches eBay in the United States for new listings that match your words and price and emails you each one. Words you’d put a minus sign before go in Exclude, and must-have words in Must include, so there’s no syntax to remember. There is a free plan.
Our guide to getting eBay alerts compares both ways in more detail.
Putting it together: milwaukee m18 fuel impact -battery -charger, condition used, Buy It Now, sorted by newly listed, with a price range set from recent sales. Saved, it becomes an alert for exactly the bare tool you want.
